A cutting tool is a wedge-shaped and quick edge tool that is used to remove the extra layer of material from the workpiece by shearing during machining in order to get the desired size, shape, and accuracy. It is rigidly mounted on the machine instrument. The relation velocity between workpiece and cutting instrument is also provided by different mechanical and other arrangements for cutting action.

List of cutting tools

A cutting tool is usually the cutter used in machining operation. Different machining operations utilize different cutters and thus different names are accessible for these cutters based on the application. A list of generally used cutting tools is provided below.

• Single point turning tool -cutter for turning work done in a lathe
• Drill - cutter for drilling work done on drilling machine or milling or lathe machine
• Milling cutter - cutter for milling operations done on a milling machine
• Fly cutter - cutter for fly milling operation done in milling machine
• Planer - cutter for planning work done in the planing machine
• Shaper - cutter for shaping work done in shaping machine
• Boring bar - cutter for boring work done in boring or drilling machine
• Broach - cutter for broaching work done in broaching machine
• Reamer - cutter for reaming operation is done in drilling machine
• Grinding wheel - abrasive cutter for grinding work in grinding machine
• Hob - cutter for hobbing work done in a hobbing machine

Materials of cutting tool

During machining, part of the cutting instrument remains in physical contact with the workpiece and thus experiences extreme cutting temperature and insistent rubbing. The material of the cutting instrument must have the capability to sustain top cutting temperature as well as cutting force. Every tool material must process certain properties such as high warm hardness, high hardness, higher melting point, high strength and chemically inert even at top cutting temperature.
